I never liked the original Mercer figure, and had stopped collecting Joes
when the second Mercer figure came out--but I don't really like that one either.
The original Mercer seemed like Hasbro tried to make him like an
ex-Viper...but not too hard. I mean, what was up with the sky blue pants and
the orange life vest? Way too bright and happy, and besides--I always thought
that an ex-Viper would still wear some of his Viper garb.
I always envisioned the character as some dude who's just went AWOL from the
Cobra army, tearing off his sleeves because he's a badass, and removing the
Cobra insignia to show that he's defected.
So, I took a v.1 Viper and a v.1 Mercer, and cobbled together the Mercer figure
I always wanted. I painted Mercer's hair a darker brown, and touched up the silver
armband, silver watch, and black glove. On the Viper vest, I "blacked out" the Cobra
logo--which was fading anyway.
